Anyone holding a standard Ghanaian passport, the kind nearly every citizen in the country carries, has one number that matters more than any other on Ghana’s growing list of travel agreements: 41.
That is how many countries, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ official register updated as recently as 8 September 2026, currently waive the visa requirement specifically for this passport type, rather than the considerably wider access granted to Service or Diplomatic passport holders.
Fourteen of the 41 arrive through Ghana’s ECOWAS membership rather than a one-on-one deal, and the remaining 27 have each been negotiated individually.
Three of those individually negotiated waivers, the Maldives, Zambia and Antigua and Barbuda, only took effect this month.
Here is the complete breakdown.
West Africa, Under ECOWAS
The fourteen countries in this group don’t rest on anything Ghana arranged on its own.
They flow from the ECOWAS Protocol on Free Movement of Persons, a regional treaty signed in Dakar in 1979, which grants citizens of member states the right to enter one another’s territory for up to 90 days carrying nothing more than a valid passport and, at least in principle, an international health certificate.
Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Cabo Verde, the Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo all fall under this arrangement.
It is the closest thing to genuinely frictionless travel that exists anywhere on this list.
The Rest of Africa
Fifteen further African countries extend a waiver to Ghana’s Ordinary passport outside the ECOWAS framework.
Eswatini, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe each permit a stay of up to 90 days, while Zambia allows 30.

Morocco sits in this group too, though its arrangement carries a small but important condition: Ghanaians travelling there must first secure a free electronic travel authorization at access-maroc.ma, typically approved within one to three days, before they are allowed to board.
It is not a visa in the traditional sense, no embassy visit, no fee, but it is a required step, and skipping it isn’t an option.
South Africa’s inclusion here also deserves a closer look than a simple listing allows, given a public clarification about its status that followed in 2026.

The Caribbean and the Wider Americas
Ten countries across this region currently waive their visa requirement for Ghana’s Ordinary passport.
Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, Dominica, Guyana, Jamaica, St Kitts and Nevis, St Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago each allow up to 90 days, while Grenada caps its own waiver at 30.
Asia
Only two Asian countries currently appear on Ghana’s list, but one of them is a genuine standout.
Singapore, a country that extends visa waivers to relatively few nationalities worldwide, grants a full 90 days here, a detail worth noting given how selectively it typically applies this kind of access.
The Maldives, one of the three agreements that only entered into force this month, allows a shorter 30-day stay.

The Countries That Need an Extra Step
Morocco is the clearest example of a waiver that isn’t quite as simple as the word visa-free implies.
Travellers still need to complete a short, free registration online before departure, through the government’s own access-maroc.ma portal, with approval typically arriving within one to three days.
Treating this step as optional, or assuming visa-free means no paperwork whatsoever, is the kind of mistake that can leave a traveller stranded at check-in.
If a Country Expected to Be Here Isn’t Listed
Colombia, Serbia and the United Arab Emirates are not visa-free for a standard Ghanaian passport holder.
Those waivers exist, but only for Service or Diplomatic passport holders.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this list only cover tourism?
These waivers generally cover tourism and short business visits.
Studying, working, or staying beyond the listed duration requires the relevant permit, even in a country on this list.
Is a return ticket required for these countries?
Many do require proof of onward or return travel, along with a passport valid for a set period beyond the stay, commonly six months.
Requirements vary by country, so checking the specific destination before booking is worthwhile.
Why is Zambia only 30 days when most others allow 90?
Each waiver agreement sets its own terms individually.
Zambia, Maldives and Grenada currently cap stays at 30 days, while most of the rest allow 90.
Is this list guaranteed to stay accurate?
Visa policy changes periodically as new agreements are signed or existing ones reviewed.
This page is checked against Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs official register and updated whenever that register changes.
Should this replace checking before travel?
Treat this as a starting point, but reconfirm with Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the destination’s embassy close to the travel date, since requirements can shift with limited public notice.
