Is Kenya Visa-Free for Ghanaians? (2026)

Kenya visa-free rules for Ghanaians have changed twice in under two years.

Kenya is visa-free for Ghana’s standard passport holders in 2026, for stays of up to 90 days.

Unlike travellers from many other countries, Ghanaians do not need to apply for Kenya’s Electronic Travel Authorization either.

Here is the full explanation of how an eTA differs from a genuine visa waiver: What Does “Visa-Free” Actually Mean for Ghanaians?

A Quick History of How Kenya’s Policy Changed

On 1 January 2024, Kenya abolished traditional visa requirements for every foreign nationality and replaced them with an Electronic Travel Authorization system.

This meant most visitors still had to apply and pay online before travelling even though no traditional visa was involved.

Then, starting in May 2025, Kenya extended a further exemption specifically to most African nationals, removing the eTA requirement itself for that group of travellers.

Ghana falls within that exemption, which is why the country’s own Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists Kenya as visa-free with no additional note attached, unlike Morocco, which still carries its own ETA requirement despite also being described as visa-free.

Kenya’s shift also reflects a broader continental push toward loosening travel restrictions between African nations, something several other countries have pursued in different ways over recent years.

Rwanda and the Seychelles, both already visa-free for Ghana, took similar steps earlier, and Kenya’s 2025 exemption for African nationals brought it into closer alignment with that wider regional trend rather than setting an entirely new precedent of its own.

Kenya’s Visa Policy for Ghanaians Today

No visa, and no eTA either.

A Ghanaian travelling on an Ordinary, Service or Diplomatic passport can enter Kenya for tourism or business carrying nothing more than a valid passport, for a stay of up to 90 days.

This puts Kenya in a small group of countries on Ghana’s list where the process genuinely involves zero paperwork submitted in advance, a category that also includes ECOWAS members and a handful of others such as Rwanda.

That stands in clear contrast to Morocco’s ETA requirement or the visa application the UAE still expects.

Documents Still Worth Carrying

A valid Ghanaian passport remains the essential document, and proof of onward or return travel is worth carrying even though Kenya’s current policy does not formally require a visa or eTA, since border officials can still ask for it.

Having a clear tourism or business reason for the visit matters more in practice than any single piece of paperwork, particularly given how recently Kenya’s entire entry system changed.

Travellers who remember the earlier eTA system sometimes still expect to complete an online form before departure out of habit.

Doing so isn’t necessary anymore, though it also isn’t harmful for someone who applies out of caution before realising the requirement no longer applies to Ghanaian citizens specifically.

What Ghanaian Travellers Should Know Before Booking

Nairobi and Mombasa remain the two most common entry points for Ghanaian travellers, both served by direct or one-stop flights from Accra.

Because no eTA or visa application sits between booking a flight and boarding it, a trip to Kenya can be arranged on considerably shorter notice than one to a country still requiring advance registration.

This makes Kenya one of the more straightforward East African options for a short-notice business trip or a holiday planned only a few weeks out.

What About Nearby East African Countries?

Ghana also holds visa waivers with several of Kenya’s immediate neighbours, including Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania, each also sitting on the 90-day list for a standard passport.

Anyone planning a wider trip across East Africa should still check each country’s specific terms individually rather than assuming Kenya’s current rules extend automatically across the whole region, since each agreement was negotiated and confirmed separately.
