Colombia, Serbia and the United Arab Emirates are commonly assumed to be visa-free for Ghanaians.
These countries are not actually visa-free for the passport almost every Ghanaian actually carries.
Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ own official register, updated as recently as 8 September 2026, lists 62 countries with some form of visa waiver in place.
Of those 62, 21 apply only to Service or Diplomatic passport holders, government officials and civil servants travelling on official duty, not to the passport that covers the vast majority of Ghanaian travellers.
Why the Distinction Gets Missed So Often
Ghana’s own announcements about new visa waivers tend to list every agreement together, without always specifying which passport type each one covers.
A headline stating that Ghana signed a visa waiver with Colombia gives no indication on its own of which passport the agreement actually covers.
The Ministry’s detailed register draws the distinction clearly, listing each waiver against the specific passport type it applies to.
The Countries Where an Ordinary Passport Still Needs a Visa
Several of the 21 sit in Africa.
Algeria, Angola, Equatorial Guinea, Namibia and Sudan all maintain a visa requirement for a standard Ghanaian passport, even though Service and Diplomatic passport holders can enter each of them freely.
Europe contributes Germany, Hungary, Malta and Serbia to this list, all four requiring a standard visa application for the Ordinary passport regardless of Ghana’s wider visa-free network.
The Americas add Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Suriname and Venezuela, and Asia contributes China, India, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.
The United Arab Emirates is a particularly frequent source of confusion, since e-visa services for it are widely advertised while Ghana’s Ordinary passport was never covered by an actual waiver in the first place.
Rounding out the group are Hong Kong, Qatar and Turkey, three destinations reserved exclusively for Ghana’s Diplomatic passport holders, one tier above even the Service passport.
What to Do About Travel to One of These Countries
None of this closes the door on travel to any of these 21 destinations.
It just means the process runs through the same channel it would for most non-waivered countries: an embassy application, an eVisa where the destination offers one, or a visa-on-arrival if that option exists.

Checking Which Passport Type Is in Hand
Every Ghanaian passport states its type clearly on the cover and on its data page, and confirming this takes a moment.
An Ordinary passport is what the vast majority of the population holds, issued through the standard application process available to any citizen.
If there is any doubt about which type applies, checking the document itself settles the question far more reliably than assuming based on a job title or a government connection.
What Happens If the Wrong Waiver Is Assumed
Arriving at check-in or at a foreign border without the correct visa in hand rarely ends well.
Airlines can refuse to board a passenger who lacks the documentation the destination requires, since carriers face financial penalties for transporting travellers who are then denied entry on arrival.
A border officer who finds a traveller without the right visa can refuse entry outright, and in some cases the traveller is held for a return flight at their own cost.
Confirming the correct waiver against the specific passport in hand, well before booking a flight, avoids this entirely.
Ghana’s Passport Office and the relevant destination embassy are both reliable points of confirmation when a traveller is unsure which category their passport falls under or which waiver actually applies to it.
