Ghana’s passport has opened considerably more of the world to its holders in recent years, and that expansion continued just days ago.
On 8 September 2026, Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Ghanaians can now travel without a visa to the Maldives, Zambia and Antigua and Barbuda, the latest entries on a list that has grown steadily under Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
The Ministry’s own official register puts that list at 62 countries in total, a figure that applies unevenly across Ghana’s three passport categories.
The 62-country figure does not apply uniformly to every Ghanaian traveller.
Ghana issues three kinds of passport, Ordinary, Service and Diplomatic, and the waiver a country grants often depends entirely on which one a traveller happens to be holding.
Of the 62, only 41 apply to the Ordinary passport that nearly every reader of this guide actually carries.
The remaining waivers apply to Service and Diplomatic passports, issued to civil servants and diplomats travelling on official government business.
The sections below break the full list down by passport category, so travellers can confirm exactly where they stand before booking a trip.
The Three Passport Categories, and Why the Difference Matters
Ghana issues an Ordinary passport to its regular citizens, which is what almost everyone reading this holds.
A Service passport goes to civil servants and government employees travelling on official duty, separate from a personal holiday or business trip.
A Diplomatic passport sits above both, reserved for accredited diplomats, ambassadors and senior state officials representing the country abroad.
When a waiver is listed against Service or Diplomatic only, it does not extend to someone travelling on a regular civilian passport, regardless of how closely tied that person’s work is to government activity.

The 41 Countries Open to a Standard Ghanaian Passport
Fourteen countries arrive as a single package rather than individual deals.
Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Cabo Verde, the Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo are all fellow members of ECOWAS, and access to them runs through a regional treaty rather than anything Ghana negotiated on its own.
Each of these fourteen countries allows a stay of up to 90 days.
Beyond West Africa, the rest of the continent adds another fifteen destinations.
Eswatini, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe all allow a 90-day stay with nothing more than a valid passport.
Zambia, the most recent addition among them, caps its own waiver at 30 days.
Morocco also belongs on this list, though with a requirement worth flagging now and explaining fully later: Ghanaians must still register online before travelling there, even though no traditional visa or embassy visit is required.

Ten more countries across the Caribbean and the wider Americas round out the non-African portion of the list.
Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, Dominica, Guyana, Jamaica, St Kitts and Nevis, St Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago all grant 90 days.
Grenada holds its own waiver to 30 days.
Asia contributes just two entries, but they are notable ones.
Singapore, a country generally selective about which passports it waives visas for at all, allows a full 90 days.
The Maldives, one of this month’s three new additions, allows 30 days.

Two of these entries deserve more attention than a plain listing can give them.
Morocco’s arrangement, despite being described as visa-free, requires a fast and free online authorization in advance.
South Africa’s waiver was also the subject of a public clarification earlier this year that is worth understanding in full.

What Service and Diplomatic Passports Add
Everything available to the Ordinary passport carries over automatically to the Service passport, since it sits one tier above in Ghana’s system.
What makes it different is the eighteen additional countries it unlocks on top of that base list, pushing the total to 59.
Algeria, Angola, Brazil, China, Colombia, Cuba, Equatorial Guinea, Germany, Hungary, India, Malta, Namibia, Serbia, Sudan, Suriname, Venezuela and the United Arab Emirates all grant a 90-day waiver to Service passport holders specifically.
Iran limits its own version to 30 days.
None of these apply on the Ordinary passport.
This distinction is set out in full in the dedicated guide to Service passport waivers: Visa-Free Countries for Ghana’s Service Passport Holders (2026)
The Diplomatic passport carries the widest reach of the three, extending everything available to Service passport holders and adding three more countries reserved exclusively for it.
Hong Kong, Qatar and Turkey each offer a 90-day stay to Diplomatic passport holders.
That brings the total for Diplomatic passport holders to the full 62 currently on Ghana’s register, the figure most headlines about the country’s visa waiver network refer to, even though it describes the smallest group of travellers among the three passport types.

Not Sure If a Country Actually Applies to You?
The UAE, Colombia and Serbia are not visa-free for a standard Ghanaian passport, even though each carries a waiver for Service and Diplomatic passport holders.
