How Is It Different From the Direct Russian Government Scholarship?
Russia’s Education Quota (often called the Russian Government Scholarship) can be reached in two ways. Open Doors is one of them: winners earn the right to study within the Quota with tuition funded from the federal budget.
The other is a direct application through the government’s Education in Russia system, with its own deadlines. One university page lists 15 December 2026 for CIS countries and 15 January 2027 for all other countries for the 2027/28 intake. Check the current dates on the official portal, because they can change.
Who Can Enter?
Foreign citizens and stateless persons, including compatriots living abroad, can take part. Each track also has an age range and an education requirement, measured on the registration opening date (20 August 2026):
| Track | Age | Education requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor’s | 16 to 23 | No Bachelor’s, Specialist or Master’s degree; completed or about to complete secondary education |
| Master’s | 20 to 33 | No Specialist or Master’s degree; at least a Bachelor’s, held or due this academic year |
| Doctoral | 22 to 35 | No completed PhD; a Master’s or Specialist degree, held or due this academic year |
| Postdoctoral | 24 to 39 | A PhD, Candidate of Sciences or Doctor of Sciences degree |
The age and education rules above come from the official 2026 rules. Check your age against them before you spend time on a portfolio.
What Do Winners Receive?
- Free tuition. Winners of the Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral tracks receive free tuition for a programme taught in English or Russian, and a year of free Russian-language training if they choose a Russian-taught programme.
- Priority in choosing a programme. Winners choose among the organising universities, subject to language evidence.
- Possible government grant support (stipend). It depends on the conditions in the rules. Winners and runners-up must have won a quota place and be ready for full-time study in Russian. For participants who finished with high achievements, a recommendation letter from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or Rossotrudnichestvo is also required. The amount is not stated in the official sources I found.
- Postdoctoral track. Winners are offered a research position at an organising university. This is a job offer, not a student scholarship.
Do not assume accommodation or living costs are covered unless the university confirms it in writing.
How the Olympiad Works
Bachelor’s and Master’s tracks (two stages)
- Stage 1: a portfolio competition. You take an entry test, write a motivation letter, describe relevant achievements and upload supporting documents.
- Stage 2: the final tasks. These are proctored online, with your screen and webcam recorded. You must use a stable internet connection.
Doctoral and Postdoctoral tracks (three stages)
- Stage 3 is a set of online interviews, held from 22 December 2026 to 26 February 2027. Doctoral applicants need a supervisor willing to take them on or a recommendation from a Doctoral Track manager.

What Happens If You Win?
Winners and runners-up in the Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral tracks submit documents to the Ministry’s information system, and instructions are sent within ten calendar days of the lists being published. Bachelor’s and Master’s winners choose a language of instruction and one field of study, then list up to six universities in order of preference. They may use their place in the year of the olympiad or the following year. Official Rules: International Open Doors Olympiad Russian Scholarship +2
How Competitive Is It?
Over ten years, the project has attracted more than 618,000 participants from over 200 countries, and more than 16,700 became winners or runners-up. That is fewer than three in every hundred. Apply seriously and prepare well.
Tips
- Register this week. Do not wait for the last days.
- Prepare your passport scan now.
- Write a specific motivation letter that explains why you chose your subject area and Russia.
- Choose your language of instruction early. The stipend rules favour Russian-language study, so think about this before you commit.
- Use the university webinars. The official site lists live sessions and recordings from the organising universities.
- Practise with a stable connection before the proctored stage.
- Contact the official team at opendoors@globaluni.ru if you have a question.
Common Mistakes
- Missing 1 November because another site said 13 November.
- Registering twice. Participants may hold only one account, and a breach can lead to disqualification.
- Giving false or inaccurate details. This can lead to disqualification and loss of any status awarded.
- Name mismatches between your account and your passport.
- Skipping the age check.
- Assuming a stipend and housing are guaranteed.
- Relying on aggregator sites instead of the official one.
Beware of Scams
Registration is free. Never pay anyone to “secure” a place or guarantee a win. Register only on the official Open Doors website and ask the Project Office if you are unsure.
